I'm Simon from Breakdown Man, based in Wigan — right at the junction of the M6, M58, and M61. That central position means I can reach most North West motorway locations within 30 minutes. I'm fully trained for hard shoulder recovery, live lane recovery, and smart motorway incidents.

Motorway Compliant

  • Safety equipment — Quick deployment recovery trucks, slide beds as beaver tails are not compliant to be used as a type approved recovery truck.
  • Training — Training on motorways is important.
  • Speed — Motorway rest areas, hard shoulders are on cctv
  • Breakdown - Breakdowns are common on motorways but its important to understand the regulations on all motorways.

Highways & Motorways

Highways & Motorways are often described as the safest roads a driver can use.

  • Engine failure — overheating, oil pressure loss, or complete mechanical failure at speed. Pull over safely, turn on your hazards, and call me
  • Tyre blowouts — high-speed tyre failure is dangerous. Stay in your vehicle if you can't reach a safe refuge area. I'll change your tyre or recover you
  • Accidents — my accident recovery service handles motorway collisions, working with police and Highways England to clear the scene
  • Fuel problems — running out of fuel or putting in the wrong fuel. Both need professional recovery — don't try to limp to the next services
  • Electrical failuresflat batteries, alternator failure, or complete electrical shutdown
  • Smart motorway breakdowns — no hard shoulder means you're in a live lane. This is the highest-risk scenario — I'll coordinate with Highways to reach you safely

Whatever's happened, don't panic. Call 07549 676 220 and I'll get there as fast as I can.

Motorway Time Limit - Location

Any driver is allowed 2 hours waiting time from the moment he stops along a motorway. Heavily observed by highways england you must have a legitimate reason to be stationary. A disabled vehicle is a hazard to other road users.

  1. Call 07549 676 220 — tell me which motorway, the direction you're heading, and any nearby landmarks or junction numbers. This helps me reach you as quickly as possible.
  2. Stay safe — if you're on a hard shoulder, exit the vehicle on the passenger side and wait behind the barrier. Keep your hazard lights on. On a smart motorway with no hard shoulder, stay in your vehicle with your seatbelt on and call 999 as well.
  3. I arrive and secure the scene — I'll set up traffic management, position my recovery vehicle safely, and assess your breakdown.
  4. Quick roadside fix or recovery — some problems can be fixed on the spot. If not, I'll load your vehicle onto my flatbed and get you off the motorway safely.
  5. Delivery — I'll take your vehicle to your garage, your home, or the nearest safe location. You and your passengers travel with me in the cab.

SOS Phone ON Motorways

Sos phones are often located on yellow bays often described as emergency bays and an emergency rest area. Smart motorways often operate sos bays approximately 1.5 miles apart and are designed to be a 100 meters in length. When your vehicle stops its worth ensuring you leave sufficient room for a recovery truck or breakdown truck to have access in front of your vehicle.
